Flotilla 1-2 was founded by Mr. Dante Laurino in 1999, and formally chartered on February 14, 2000.  The flotilla is part of US Coast Guard Auxiliary Division One, which in and of itself is a unit of the First Coast Guard District, Southern Region.  During 2001, Flotilla 1-2 held four boating safety courses for the Amityville populace, stationed its members at area marinas and boat launching ramps to conduct no-fee vessel safety examinations, participated in numerous on-water safety patrols, and participated in the Amityville Street Festival. After the September 11 attacks, flotilla members worked side by side with Coast Guard regulars and reservists at Station Fire Island, standing watch at the station, and manning security patrols in New York Harbor.   The flotilla also won the Division 1 award for excellence in public education (PE) for 2001; quite an accomplishment for a flotilla in its first year of running PE courses!
